Asphalt pavements, on the contrary to concrete pavements, provide the users with a smooth, continous and joint free surface with superior driving comfort.


Road marks are perfectly visible on asphalt surfaces.


The repairing process is easier and faster for asphalt pavements. The damaged sections could be repaired in shorter durations resulting with less traffic jam. However, the repairing process is costly, and much more time consuming for concrete pavements, and depending on the extend of the repair, repairing process can turnsin to a renewal job. Ironicly, most effective method for dealing the concrete surface wearing problem, is paving the surface with asphalt.


The skid resistance for the asphalt pavements can easily be enhanced by adjusting the mixture while rather complex roughening procedures have to be carried out for concrete surfaces.


The dark colour of asphalt pavements preserves the heat and thereby eases the evoporation. Accordingly asphalt pavements are much more suitable also for icy weather conditions.


Smooth and noise free asphalt roads diminishe drivers stress and tiredness.


It is also possible to employ asphalt mixtures which instantaneously drains the rain water, to provide much safer road conditions under rain.


Asphalt is not a reactive material like concrete. It is corrosion free, due to its resistance to acids and sulphates. Does not react with other substances. Chemicals used for melting the ice do not harm asphalt pavements.


Asphalt pavements do not need curing time like concrete pavements and can be opened to traffic immediately after the surface cools down to surrounding weather temperature.


Due to its fast construction technique, it is possible to overlay on the preceding layers immediately, preventing any damage by the weather conditions that would otherwise be of concern.


Additional pavement of 4-5 cm. is sufficient at most times, whenever restrenghtening is needed in time.


Asphalt pavements are easily opened and extracted whenever new pipelines of water, gas  etc. need to be furnished.


The major disadvantage of concrete pavements are the contraction cracks that is usually observed on the surface due to the temperature changes and the reaction of water  with cement. Furthermore, concrete pavements are more adversely affected by the distortions imposed by the base. Such damages are very difficult to repair.


The flexibility that asphalt possesses, is of critical concern. Due to its flexibility, asphalt pavements are more successfull in transfering the surface loads to the base, enabling thinner layer thicknesses than concrete pavements especially under lower traffic conditions.


Due to the incremental construction technique employed, asphalt pavements provide suitable alternatives for investments suffering budget constraints. Asphalt pavement, constructed with lowest thickness possible, can be opened to traffic in the preliminary years of investment and be strenghtened later on the following periods whenever needed funds are allocated.


Asphalt pavements are more suitable for cold climate conditions. Asphalts is flexible and is more resistant to temperature changes and freezing and melting conditions.


Asphalt is also an evironment friendly choice. It is fully recyclable. Trimmed asphalt can be used again as cold or hot mixture, by adding new bitumen, aggregate and some recycling agents if needed, either on site or central asphalt plant. With such a procedure, cost and energy savings can be achieved and raw material sources are preserved. Furthermore, by recycling the transportation and storage costs are avoided.
