ASPHALT LAYERS

Wearing Course (Surface Course): The wearing course which is used as the final asphalt layer, is applied as asphaltic concrete, generally with a compacted thickness of  5 cm. There are two types of wearing course gradations to be chosen according to expected needs.

Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Course (Type 1): The maximum aggregate size is 19 mm. (3/4”), should be applied at roads under heavy and crowded traffic.

Asphaltic Concrete Wearing Course (Type 2): The maximum aggregate size is 12,5 mm. (1/2”), should be applied at sports courts, pedestrian ways, and roads under light traffic. Bitumen content of the mixture is higher than that of Type 1.

Binder Course: The binder layer is also applied as asphaltic concrete, generally on either bitumen stabilized base or plant-mix base surfaces, with a  compacted thickness of  6-8 cm. according to the traffic load.

Bitumen Stabilized Base Course: Bitumen stabilized base course is generally applied on plantmix base, with a  compacted thickness of  8-18 cm. according to the traffic load.

In addition to the above list, there are other asphalt types like modified asphaltic concrete, Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), Porose Asphalt which are used less frequently rather for special purposes.
